This 64-hour course will provide you with the most critical skills and standards when working in the medical field as a professional interpreter. In this class, you will learn the following:

  • Interpreting Skills for Mental Health**
  • Communication Skills and Critical Thinking
  • Professional Development
  • Medical Vocabulary (anatomy, physiology, etc.)

Bridging the Gap is taught in English and is open to bilingual students of all languages who have passed the language proficiency.

  • Requirement: Most medical organizations require BTG training as part of the hiring process when looking for Professional Medical Interpreters.
  • Your certificate from the Cross Cultural Health Care Program will be recognized nationwide!
  • You will practice with experienced interpreters through role-playing and other exercises.
  • Curriculum: The BTG training program covers a comprehensive curriculum that includes medical terminology, ethics and standards of practice, interpreting techniques, cultural competence, and healthcare systems. The curriculum is tailored to medical interpreters’ specific needs and challenges in healthcare settings.
  • Skills Development: The training program focuses on developing essential interpreting skills, such as active listening, memory retention, paraphrasing, and sight translation. Participants learn to convey medical information clearly and concisely between patients and healthcare providers.
  • Language Proficiency: This enables interpreters to effectively communicate with patients and healthcare providers in diverse linguistic settings.
  • Cultural Competence: The training program emphasizes the importance of cultural competence in medical interpreting. It teaches interpreters to recognize and respect cultural differences, beliefs, and practices that may impact healthcare communication. Cultural competence helps interpreters build rapport and trust with patients, enhancing the quality of care.
  • Ethical Guidelines: BTG training provides interpreters with a solid understanding of ethical guidelines and standards of practice for medical interpreting. Participants learn about confidentiality, impartiality, accuracy, and professionalism, ensuring they adhere to ethical principles while performing their duties.
  • Certification: Upon completion of the training program, participants may have the opportunity to pursue certification as medical interpreters through recognized certification bodies such as the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI) or the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI). Certification demonstrates proficiency and competence in medical interpreting, enhancing job opportunities and professional credibility.
  • Continuing Education: BTG training may offer continuing education opportunities for certified medical interpreters to stay updated on industry trends, best practices, and emerging issues in healthcare interpreting. Continuing education ensures that interpreters maintain their skills and knowledge over time and stay informed about changes in the healthcare landscape.

BTG General Information

  • Minimum 10 participants
  • Application, payment agreement, deposit, and LPAs must be submitted no later than the deadline
  • The remaining balance is due on the first day of class
  • This training will provide you with the certificate of completion and not a certification

The Cost of BTG Medical Interpreter Training includes:

  • A 64-hour Textbook for Medical Interpreters
  • Mental Health Glossary
  • Bilingual Glossary (one per participant)
  • Certificate of successful completion **after passing the final exam with a score of 70% or higher

BTG Prerequisite:

  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • Minimum education: high school or GED diploma
  • Complete the application, including the signed payment agreement
  • Deposit (see application for cost)
  • Proof of two LPAs (Language Proficiency Assessments): target and source languages
  • Applicants must be able to attend all 64 hours of training

**If an applicant cannot attend the training they registered for, the payment can be held for one calendar year from the original course’s start date.

**After receiving the application, MHMS staff will email you an invoice and additional instructions once the language proficiency requirements have been met.
