Bridging the Gap 40-hour Training

This 40-hour course will provide you with the most critical skills and standards when working in the medical field as a professional interpreter. In this class, you will learn the following:

  • Interpreting Skills
  • Codes of Ethics
  • The Four Roles of the Medical Interpreter
  • Modes of Interpreting
  • The U.S. Health Care System
  • The U.S. Health Disparities
  • Communication Skills and Critical Thinking
  • Professional Development
  • Medical Vocabulary (anatomy, physiology, etc.)

Bridging the Gap is taught in English and is open to bilingual students of all languages who have passed the language proficiency.

  • This 40-hour training qualifies as a prerequisite for the national certification provided by the Certification Commission for Health Care Interpreters (CCHI) and the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (MBCMI)
  • Most medical organizations require BTG training as part of the hiring process when looking for Professional Medical Interpreters.
  • Your certificate from the Cross Cultural Health Care Program will be recognized nationwide!
  • You will practice with experienced interpreters through role-playing and other exercises.

BTG General Information

  • Minimum 10 participants
  • Application, payment agreement, deposit, and LPAs must be submitted no later than the deadline
  • The remaining balance is due on the first day of class
  • This training will provide you with the certificate of completion and not a certification

The Cost of BTG Medical Interpreter Training Includes:

  • A 40-hour Textbook for Medical Interpreters
  • Bilingual Glossary (one per participant)
  • Certificate of successful completion **after passing the final exam with a score of 70% or higher

BTG Prerequisites

  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • Minimum education: high school or GED diploma
  • Complete the application, including the signed payment agreement
  • Deposit (see application for cost)
  • Proof of two LPAs (Language Proficiency Assessments): target and source languages
  • Applicants must be able to attend all 40 hours of training
*If an applicant cannot attend the training they registered for, the payment can be held for one calendar year from the original course’s start date.
*After receiving the application, MHMS staff will email you an invoice and additional instructions once the language proficiency requirements have been met.
